Great Soul - Artists Today
Soul artists of the past are well known; Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, James Brown and Al Green, to name but a few. And although they have paved the way for today’s artists, that does not diminish the soul talent of today. Anthony Hamilton from North Carolina began singing at the young age of ten. Today, with five albums and countless awards to his credit, he has been compared to Otis Redding, only better. Known as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige exploded on the soul scene in 1980. Today she has three Grammy Awards under her belt, and countless albums. She’s performed with Puff Daddy on several occasions, and continues to stun the R&B world with her moving lyrics and soulful voice.
Jocelyen Stone, better known as Joss, is a soul singer from the UK. Already with three critically acclaimed soul albums to her name by the age of twenty, Joss has released her fourth album, “Colour Me Free” in 2009. Raised in the Bronx, N.Y., Rahsaan Patterson started out as a child actor. The 1984 show “Kids Incorporated” cast Rahsaan in the leading role. Working alongside him were the yet to be discovered talents of Fergie, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Shanice. Later, in 1997, Rahsaan released his first self-titled album. The album was a critical success and was followed by “Love in Stereo” in 1999, “After Hours” in 2004, and finally “Wines and Spirits”, released in 2007. Rahsaan lost his father in 2005, and his 2007 album reflects that loss.
